40th Anniversary 2013
The Orere Rural Fire Service celebrated its 40th anniversary at a function on 7 September. Past members were there, including some 'originals' who shared amusing stories of the brigade's early days.

It's not all about fighting fires. In fact, the majority of call-outs are attending medical emergencies and vehicle crashes. The Fairmont below jumped the fence at high speed on Kawakawa-Orere Road, narrowly missing a fencing contractor who was in the right place at the wrong time. One event the local brigade had a big hand in was the annual Guy Fawkes night on the beach. Unfortunately, council regulations have now made this popular event too difficult to run.

It's spring now, and part of the spring clean should be checking your smoke alarms. Haven't got any? These devices are only a few dollars to buy, and time and time again, they have been proven to be life savers - or not, either where none were installed, of they did not have functioning batteries in them. Just having them is only part of the deal - you need to ensure that the batteries are up to scratch by testing them periodically. If you need help installing or checking, just ask a friend or neighbour, or talk to somebody in the fire brigade.
